Holy Family Catholic School might want to put chili rellenos on the lunch menu, as it rolls out a cookbook honoring its pastor’s mother, Louise Barricks. Louise is considered the matriarch of Holy Family Parish, and the introduction of the book, Louise’s Mexican and More, A Barricks Family Cookbook coincides with her 95th birthday on November 12. Louise is very active at the church where her son, Fr. Robert Barricks, has been pastor for 13 years. She is a familiar figure around the school, particularly with the first grade class, where she visits every Monday to lead the children in prayers. Louise also has a special relationship with Holy Family School seventh graders, who are eligible to compete in an essay contest in which the winner is awarded a $1,000 tuition scholarship for use toward his or her eighth grade tuition. “The genesis of the cookbook came out of a conversation praising Louise’s Mexican dinner she offers at the annual Holy Family School auction,” says Molly Shank, one of the cookbook committee members. “My family has purchased that dinner for several years, and it is an amazing meal. We asked if she would share her recipes with others, and it became a wonderful project honoring Louise’s Hispanic heritage and involving the entire Barricks family!” The cookbook will be introduced with two book signings: Saturday, Nov. 14th, 6:30-7:00 p.m. inside Holy Family Church located at SE 39th Avenue & Flavel St., and Sunday, Nov. 15th, 9:30-10:30 a.m. in Holy Family’s Celebration Hall across from the church. A cookbook order form can be downloaded at www.holyfamilypdx.org and the books will be for sale $15 each throughout the holidays at both the parish office at 3732 SE Knapp Street and at the school office at 7425 SE 39th Avenue during business hours. Proceeds from the cookbook sales will be split between the Louise Barricks Tuition Scholarship Fund and the school’s tuition assistance program.
